Go For It

moving in the right direction …

At the Havilah project, we enjoy nothing better than seeing people getting their lives back on track – people who were at the lowest ebb and who now know the meaning of, ‘Amazing grace, that saved a wretch like me.’

T has been coming to our project for years, mostly moving in the right direction but every so often slipping back into chaos. When she told us she was pregnant, we weren’t sure what to think – wondering if she’d cope. We were equally unsure of her partner and of what stability, or otherwise, he would bring to the table?

The baby was born a few months ago and fairly quickly it became apparent that there were issues. Among other things, he is now fitted with hearing aids for both ears; we await to hear if other issues will present themselves as he grows.

But T has been brilliant! She’s faced up to every challenge and is proving herself a great mum. She so obviously adores her wee boy and surrounds him with her loving attention. It’s beautiful thing to observe.

Last Sunday, she and her partner brought him to church for a service of blessing. What a joy for the congregation to share with them in giving thanks to God and to witness these parents dedicating themselves to their son and to loving parenting!

Just a few years ago, T would have been written off by just about every observer – a hopeless case. At Havilah, she’s been welcomed and supported and encouraged to be the person she can be. To see the light in her eyes and the love in her heart has been all the reward we ever need.

And for the wee boy:

The Lord bless you and keep you;
The Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious unto you:
The Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.
